Why Nigerian Students Struggle With Mathematics (And How to Fix It Before It's Too Late)
Maths failure in Nigeria isn't about intelligence — it's about gaps that were never caught early enough.
Every year, thousands of bright, capable Nigerian students sit WAEC and walk away with an F9 or D7 in Mathematics. Not because they are not smart. Not because they did not study. But because somewhere along the line — JSS1, JSS2, JSS3 — a foundational concept was not properly understood, never corrected, and quietly buried under the next topic.
By the time the exam arrives, the cracks have become craters.
The Real Reasons Nigerian Students Struggle With Maths
1. The foundation was never solid
Mathematics is a subject where everything connects. Fractions lead to algebra. Algebra leads to quadratic equations. Quadratic equations lead to further mathematics. If a student does not truly understand fractions in primary school, they will struggle with algebra in JSS2 — and nobody will know why, because they will simply memorise their way through and move on.
This is the most common pattern: a student who appears to be keeping up, but is actually accumulating debt.
2. Large class sizes mean nobody is monitoring individual understanding
In many Nigerian schools — federal, state, and even some private — a single Mathematics teacher is managing 40 to 60 students per class. There is simply no time to identify who understood a concept and who just copied the answer from the board.
A student can sit in a Mathematics class for an entire term, smile and nod, submit their assignments, and still have no real grasp of what was taught. The teacher moves on. The student falls further behind.
3. The pressure to pass replaces the desire to understand
Nigerian students — particularly from JSS3 upwards — are under enormous pressure to pass WAEC, NECO, and JAMB. This pressure often pushes students and parents toward shortcuts: past question drilling, expo culture, and rote memorisation of formulas without understanding their application.
This works, sometimes, for other subjects. It does not work for Mathematics. The exam always introduces a variation. And a student who memorised a formula without understanding it will freeze when the question looks slightly different.
4. The transition from primary to secondary school is handled badly
This is a particularly underappreciated problem. The jump from primary school Mathematics to JSS1 is significant. Concepts like indices, directed numbers, and algebraic expressions arrive suddenly, with little scaffolding. Students who were top of their class in primary school often find themselves confused and embarrassed within the first term of secondary school.
Many parents assume it is a confidence issue or an adjustment period. Sometimes it is. But often, it is a signal that the student needs structured support immediately — not in SS2 when the damage is already done.
How to Fix It — Practically
Diagnose before you tutor. The biggest mistake parents make when their child is struggling is jumping straight into extra lessons without first identifying where the gap actually is. A student who struggles with simultaneous equations may not need simultaneous equation practice — they may need to go back and fix their algebra. Find the root, not just the symptom.
Consistency beats intensity. Three hours of Maths on a Saturday does very little. Three focused 45-minute sessions spread across the week builds retention, habits, and real progress. Structure matters more than volume.
Make the student explain, not just solve. One of the most effective teaching strategies is asking a student to explain why they took each step in a solution — not just what the answer is. If they cannot explain it, they do not understand it. This technique, used consistently, closes gaps faster than any past question ever will.
Get qualified support early. Teachers in school carry a curriculum to deliver. They do not always have the time — or the mandate — to go back two years to fill a gap for one student. That is what targeted one-on-one tutoring is for.
